UNILAD Esports has been confirmed as the final franchise in the third season of the Gfinity Elite Series.
Gfinity announced the final adjustment to the franchises this morning, with last season’s franchise winners, Reason Gaming, missing out as a result.
The third season of the Elite Series will see Counter-Strike: Global Offensive swapped for FIFA. The resulting trio of games to be played is: Rocket League, Street Fighter V and FIFA 18. UNILAD joins an impressive lineup of franchises including Fnatic, Team Vitality, Hashtag United and EnVyUs as the Elite Series undergoes serious change from the inaugural season.
Other relatively unknown entities with significant backing such as Ares Esport and Nordavind have also joined the fray in place of entities such as Team Infused, Team Prophecy, Reason Gaming and Team Endpoint.
UNILAD already compete in Call of Duty and FIFA, with the brand currently home to the world champion Spencer “Gorilla” Ealing, so one would expect the FIFA tournament to be particularly hot. The season will get underway on the 9th March and the move to add UNILAD will likely see a significant boost in the Gfinity social media reach, with the well-known media brand leveraging its comprehensive social media network to push esports related content.
“The signing of UNILAD sets up the coming season of Elite Series to be our most exciting yet and promises to deliver some blockbuster entertainment. We set out to create a UK tournament that has global appeal and the major teams and players we now have competing could grace any of the major global tournaments. “, said Neville Upton, CEO of Gfinity. “We know that UNILAD’s fans watch only the best in entertainment and that’s exactly what the Elite Series is going to give them.”
“We’re really excited that UNILAD Esports is joining the roster for the upcoming Gfinity Elite Series. The Gfinity Elite Series is the perfect tournament for our global audience to engage with the best esports content and get more fans involved in the action,” said Liam Harrington, CEO of UNILAD. “We look forward to supporting our players over the competition and working with Gfinity.”
Esports Insider says: Congratulations to both parties. UNILAD are continuing their expansion into the world of esports with SFV and Rocket League players and the Elite Series third season is stacked with big names and talent. We’re excited to see how it goes down when the action gets underway in just under a month.
