It’s not been a great year for the Overwatch League and it just got worse. OWL host Malik Forté has confirmed he won’t be returning to the League in 2020.
Malik joins a growing list of Overwatch talent not returning in 2020. He joins Chris Puckett, Erik “DoA” Lonnquist and Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles and most recently Auguste “Semmler” Massonnat.
Malik Forté had this to say about the news: “I’m not returning to the OWL broadcast team for 2020, for those who’ve asked. It’s been a long journey with the OW community so it saddens me to say. A HUGE thanks to all the fans, the amazing production crew, my talent team family and most importantly, the players!“
Malik will be missed by OWL fans. He filled so many roles within the broadcast, from reporter and interviewer to stage host, Malik was one of the key members of the broadcast and it will surely be a different place without him. It’s not certain what Malik will do next, his background is in content creating with his previous role being Gaming Editor for Nerdist. We’d certainly like to see Malik continue to host esports events in 2020 and beyond.
With the Overwatch League getting back underway on February 8th, we’re yet to find out the full talent lineup or how the homestand will be handled in this regard. While it’s a little early to worry, the OWL is set for its most important year since its inception. With Call of Duty entering its first year of franchising, Activision-Blizzard will surely be keeping a close eye on the performance of its two franchised leagues.
