The greatest League of Legends player of all time, Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, could’ve been even richer had he not stayed with SK Telecom T1 after his contract expired this off-season. On the popular Korean talk show Radio Star, the SKT mid laner confirmed that while he hadn’t seen the offers himself, he was offered a $10M contract from a Chinese LPL team and a blank check to go to North America and play in the LCS.
These offers, of course, are no longer relevant, as Faker re-signed with SKT for another two years, staying with the team where he built his career and which he elevated to the most winning franchise in LoL history. Although he will be playing with a relatively new team in 2020, Faker remains at the core of LCK’s powerhouse.
Still, it’s certainly an entertaining mental exercise to imagine where Faker could’ve landed had he chosen to leave in Korean. There are very few teams in North America who could afford to extend a blank check offer and still have enough capital to fill the other four positions, with Team Liquid, Team SoloMid, and Cloud9 standing out. In the LPL, the options are a bit more, as the region has long been known for over-spending to secure Korean stars and it doesn’t get any bigger than Faker.
Faker and T1 will start the new LCK season some time in February. The team’s first tournament of the year, the KeSPA Cup, did not end so well and T1 lost in the semifinals to SANDBOX Gaming.
